This report aims to celebrate the deep relationship of Hampshire College’s connection to its environment. Moreover, the focus and purpose of this report is to explore the redesign of the Hampshire College’s admissions building: the R.W. Kern Center. In particular, the building’s lighting system, electrical system, structural system, and mechanical system are to be explored for the possibility of redesign that more effectively and efficiently follows the driving concept and design intent of the R.W. Kern Center: Biophilia. The lighting redesign will explore ways of interacting with visitors and students. The daylighting study includes a study of the R.W. Kern Center’s ability to adapt to, and accept a passive shading system. The electrical system study will analyze the  option of placing  the building’s lighting load on a pure DC power grid in an effort to increase the efficiency of power delivery. The mechanical system analysis will consider the feasibility of incorporating a smart natural ventilation system into the building. It is important to note that each study revolves around the driving design of the building, and so it is important that that concept is clearly defined.

Biophilia: The Biophilia hypothesis suggests that there is an instinctive bond between human beings and other living systems or, as defined by Edward O. Wilson in his book, “Biophilia”,  Biophilia is defined as “the urge to affiliate with other forms of life.” This idea of natural connection is the basis of many design decisions , it  causes every choice to mold the design to create an atmosphere that represents the concept of Biophilia. A living system is breathing, moving, growing, and integrating; it encourages interaction on both physical and metaphysical levels. It is this concept that is the driving force behind the R.W. Kern Center and its integrated building systems. It has driven the Architects of Design and owners to strive to achieve all: the Living Building Status, Net-Zero energy, waste, and water. It is to act as multifunctional learning, teaching, and exhibition space as it will be the home of admissions, and serve as Hampshire College’s informational hub.
